Phryne’s Symposium

Thaïs (a courtesan), writing to Euthydemus:

We are no worse educators. Compare if you like Aspasia the courtesan and Socrates the sophist, and ask yourself which was the better educator. You will notice that Pericles sat at Aspasia’s feet, Critias at Socrates’.

Alciphro (2nd century AD), 1, 34, 7.

(Note, however, that according to ancient tradition, Socrates also sat at the feet of Aspasia, so as to learn the art of love.)

For beauty is engendered of a proper shame.

Lycophronides, Fragment 1, quoted, according to Athenaeus, Deipnosophistae, 13, 564A, by Clearchus, in his first book of Erotica.
